June 14 is Flag Day, and I headed out to Michigan Avenue and Tribune Tower. My Chicago DAR group handed out 3,000 flags this year between Water Tower and Millennium Park, and it could not have been a more beautiful day.
It was a riot to watch the people. Many expected to be asked for a donation, so their initial inclination was to decline our offer. First they would walk by B.A. and wave her off, but at the same time they’d see someone else accept the free flag. Farther on, when they reached me, they were ready to accept the gift. Everyone seemed to get a kick out of the gesture, and you should have seen the kids–they were thrilled and waved their flags like crazy!!
